US Ambassador at Large for International Religious Freedom, Samuel Brownback, assured the Ukrainian delegation of supporting the rights of believers living in the occupied territories of Ukraine to freely confession of their faith or belief.

Agreements on cooperation in this area were reached during the visit of Ukrainian parliamentarians to Washington, D.C. The Institute for Religious Freedom reports that the meeting of the Head of the Ukrainian delegation, MP Pavlo Unguryan with Ambassador Samuel Brownback, was a part of it.

The meeting participants discussed urgent issues of persecution of Ukrainians in the Russian-occupied territories of Donetsk and Luhansk regions for their pro-Ukrainian position and religious belief.

This is especially true of Evangelical Christians, Orthodox Christians of Kyiv Patriarchate, Greek Catholics, and also Crimean Tatars – primarily in the occupied Crimean Peninsula.

During the meeting, Mr. Brownback was provided with an analytical report on religious persecution in the occupied territories of Eastern Ukraine, prepared by the Institute for Religious Freedom.

In addition, during the meeting, Mr. Unhurian and Mr. Brownback agreed on a number of specific steps aimed at protection of Ukrainian victims of Russian aggression, including assistance in search of missing Ukrainian citizens.

As IRF reported, that in its annual report, the US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) declared that Russia is responsible for religious crimes in the Donbas region and the Crimea due to the effective control of these occupied territories.
