OSCE Conference criticizes Ukraine's authority for infringing believers’ rights

WARSAW – In their report to the OSCE Conference taking place in Warsaw from 30 September to 8 October, the US Delegation have criticized the Ukrainian authorities for creating obstructions or bans on movement and peaceful protests.

Due to legislative innovations and ensuing bureaucratic obstacles many religious communities in Azerbaijan failed to re-register within the prescribed period before January 1, 2010. As a result, most of them have been banned from conducting any of the religious activities and threatened with liquidation the status of “juridical entity”, said the Institute of Religious Freedom, Kyiv based on the documents obtained from Baku.

KYIV The State Committee of Ukraine on Nationalities and Religions published an updated edition of the draft Law "On Returning Religious Buildings to Religious Organizations". Objects that are subject to be returned according to the text of the draft law are “religious buildings that were confiscated from religious organizations by the state”.

Parliamentarians Propose to Ban on “Totalitarian Sects” in Ukraine

KYIV – A draft law has been tabled in parliament proposing amendments and additions to the Law on Freedom of Conscience and Religious Organizations” regarding a ban on the activities of what are termed totalitarian religious sects (reg. no. 5473). The draft law envisages prohibition on involving children and young people under 18 in religious organizations’ activities without the permission of their lawful representatives. It also proposes a ban on the creation and functioning in Ukraine of totalitarian religious sects.

Churches and religious organisations are an integral part of civil society and must, with secular organisations, take part in the life of society. National authorities should take more account of religious communities’ potential to work for dialogue, mutual recognition and solidarity.
